BS-IMS World Congress Pre-Meeting for Young Researchers 2024


August 10 and 11, 2024

Venue: University of Duisburg-Essen, Campus Essen

Essen, Germany, is located in the middle of the Ruhr Metropolitan Region and at about 20 km from Bochum, the location of the World Congress.

 

About:

The pre-meeting is a traditional event preceding the BS-IMS World Congress in Probability and Statistics. It addresses young researchers at an early stage of their academic career*. Participants will be given the opportunity to learn about selected modern research directions at the interface of probability and statistics, and to participate in discussions that pertain to career development. A further focus is to enable young researchers to network among their peer group.


Lectures will be given by:

•  Remco van der Hofstad (TU Eindhoven): Networks

•  Susan Murphy (Harvard): Reinforcement Learning

Fees:

Participation is free of charge and covers lunch and coffee breaks.


Additionally, accommodation can be granted for up to 50 participants for two nights (August 9 - August 11) in B&B Hotel in Essen (Helmut-Käutner-Straße 4, 45127 Essen); places will be given on a first-come first-serve basis.

* Registration is only possible for participants of the World Congress who are currently PhD students or who have obtained their PhD degree not earlier than 2020. Applicants must upload a copy of the academic transcript (for current Ph.D. students) or a copy of the Ph.D. certificate (if already awarded).


Scholarships

 

Applicants must belong to institutions in countries classified as no higher than "UPPER-MIDDLE-INCOME ECONOMIES" according to the World Bank's classification (please refer to World Bank Classification).

 

  • Purpose: The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to young researchers, particularly those who may face challenges attending the pre-meeting and the World Congress without financial support.
  • Coverage: Scholarships will cover accommodation, coffee breaks and travel expenses for the whole time of the pre-meeting and World Congress (August 9, 2024 – August 16, 2024).
  • Eligibility criteria: 
    -
     Applicants must currently be Ph.D. students or have obtained a Ph.D. degree no earlier than August 31, 2020.
    -
    Applicants must be from countries classified as no higher than "UPPER-MIDDLE-INCOME ECONOMIES" according to the World Bank's classification (please refer to World Bank Classification).
    -
    Applicants must be members of either the Bernoulli Society (BS) or the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) at the time of application.

 

How to Apply for Scholarships

 

First, you need to create an account in the BS-IMS World Congress registration system*. Then go to “Your Submissions” where you will find the link to submit your application.


*An account in the conference management system of the BS-IMS World Congress is required to apply for the scholarship, but no additional registration for the conference or pre-meeting is necessary. If the scholarship is granted, successful applicants will be automatically registered at no additional cost. If the scholarship is not awarded, applicants will be able to register for the main event and possibly the pre-meeting at a later date.


Interested individuals are invited to apply for the scholarship by submitting the following documents and information:

  • A copy of your academic transcript (for current Ph.D. students) or a copy of your Ph.D. certificate (if already awarded).
  • Itemized estimates of travel costs, including quotes from travel agents or online booking portals.
  • A letter of motivation explaining why funding is needed, why attending this pre-meeting and the World Congress is suitable for your academic and research goals, and a brief description of your research interests.
  • Contact information of two references who can provide recommendations on your behalf.
  • Applications can be submitted during the registration process for the World Congress; please merge the required documents into one pdf file.

Note: Successful scholarship recipients will be required to present a poster during the pre-meeting as a way to contribute to the academic exchange and networking opportunities.
